Unemployment as the most important problem
In the Most Important Problem question of Afrobarometer Round 10, 56.4% of Angolans spontaneously mention unemployment as one of the country's three most serious problems. It is the most frequently cited problem, ahead of the cost of living (42.1%), health (28.3%) and water/sanitation (21.7%).
A youth crisis
The problem is most acute among young people. Among those between 18 and 35 years old, 68.3% cite unemployment as a major problem — compared to 47.2% among those over 55. Angola has one of the youngest populations in Africa: more than 65% of the population is under 25. The structural challenge is to create enough decent jobs for a generation that is entering the labour market at a rate that far exceeds the capacity of the formal economy to absorb it.
The data also reveals a regional dimension: unemployment is perceived as most serious in the provinces of Malanje (72%), Uíge (69%) and Bié (66%), compared to 48% in Luanda.
