A systematic underperformance
When placed in comparative perspective with the 29 other countries covered by Afrobarometer Round 10, Angola ranks in the bottom quartile in 7 of the 10 governance and wellbeing indicators tracked. The country performs worst in democratic satisfaction (29th out of 30), institutional trust (27th) and perception of government performance on managing the economy (28th).
Where Angola performs relatively better
Angola is not at the bottom of every ranking. In national identity and sense of belonging, it ranks in the middle tercile (16th). In support for democracy as the best form of government (as opposed to strong-man rule or military government), it ranks 14th — suggesting that democratic values, though tested, remain broadly held. And in support for free elections, it ranks 11th.
The paradox
The comparative data reveals an important paradox: Angolans broadly support democratic values and procedures, but deeply distrust the specific institutions through which democracy is exercised in their country. This is not apathy — it is frustrated democratic aspiration. The 2027 elections will be the next test of whether that aspiration finds adequate institutional expression.
